My New Kotaku Video! (It’s Basically a Top 5.)

Remember that time you guys were all "WAAHH WAAHH WE WANT TOP 5 TO COME BACK EVEN THOUGH YOU GOT SCREWED OVER AND WERE DOING IT FOR FRE--" oh, wait. I didn't mean to say that. Scratch that from the record.

ANYWAY, my video today for Kotaku is practically a Top 5 list, I mean who are we even kidding. It actually felt like a Top 5 when I was filming/editing it. So, watch and enjoy! And read my article afterward because it's surprisingly serious and I've been meaning to get it off my chest for a long time.

Kotaku: A Birthday Letter To Myself About Video Games

  1. Between you and Extra Credits, I’m beginning to suspect there’s something suspicious going on behind the scenes at the big E-zine.

    • SPECULATION TIME!

(Note: This is based on nothing but circumstantial evidence and may or may not reflect the true nature of the situation.)

Before I begin by speculation I shall link anyone interested in a very, very intriguing article on Not Fn Cute; this particular article in fact: http://notfncute.com/archives/4112

I do not know the situation with Lisa/Save Point in regards to the ‘Top 5′. However, based on this article (which in turn was based on another article by ‘Extra Credits’ who just so happened to be on ‘The Escapist’) it is safe to assume that ‘The Escapist’ may not have held up their end of the contract in regards to payment.

Now possibly, if/when Lisa tried to remove the segment from the site, ‘The Escapist’ raised up their finger, tilted their head from side to side saying ‘Nuh uh uuhhhhh’ and held on to the rights and name of the ‘Top 5′ segment.

Again, pure speculation but I can’t think of any other reason. For why Lisa can’t talk/write about it, I’m assuming that the lawyers over at ‘The Escapist’ gave her an NDA or had something written in the contract preventing her from spilling the beans.

To sum up: ‘Gave that bitch an NDA… Bitches love NDAs’

  2. So like, what ARE the controls for Goldeneye Lisa?

    • No one knows…

      • Oh boo. Now I’ll NEVER know!

(On a serious note – my own experiences with Goldeneye were pretty similar to yours. Having never owned an N64 myself, whenever friends used to play I’d be handed the controller and then proceeded to stare constantly at the sticky red jam oozing down my corner of the screen after hopelessly walking into walls.

As a result, I never did buy into the love for that game that most others did or indeed most other N64 games – I had a similar experience with Lylatwars/Starfox 64 too, and I only got round to even playing Perfect Dark after the XBLA release)

  3. Happy birthday,
    … or month, whatever.

  4. How self-absorbed can you be to bake your own birthday cake? At least share it with the unfortunate. And by unfortunate I mean those who are unfortunate enough to be your fans.

  5. WHOA! I had no idea i was the same age as Ms. Foiles (my bd just past in July). I feel connected somehow :3. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, happy early birthday and stuff!

  6. Usually, when I see people who are younger than me and more famous and/or successful than myself, I get all “waaaah, what am I doing with my life.” But you’re actually not as much younger than me as I thought, so it somehow cancels out. :B

And I like the article. I’ve been there before (though not specifically with video games) so I definitely get where it’s coming from.

  7. Well happy Birthday and thank for the Castlevania tidbit you’d think as a Castlevania fanboy I would know. Oh here’s a video

  8. aww born the same year as meeee :)

I want some of your cake! mmm cake

PS: great background track, since you last forced it upon me i have listened to it SO much i go into a trance when it comes on (in a good way) :P

  9. A very happy belated birthday to you Miss Foiles!

YOu are too kind to treat us to a ‘Top 5′ around your birthday. Great Vid!

  10. Talking shit about Highlander is just fan-baiting Spoony, but I’m sure you already know that Lisa….

  11. Don’t lie to us Lisa; we know you still dress up as Sailor Moon and throw glitter at dogs!

Happy Birthday (read on the 29th)!

  12. Happy birthday to you! (Whenever it was!)

Also, I love the “rethink that crush on Lance Bass” part of your letter. Awesome, haha!

  13. Happy birthday Lisa. Hope it doesn’t take another 25 years of to get rid of that white whale thing.

  14. my birthday is today, the 22nd, therefore: i am awsome, please love me now……………….. rawrz

  15. *achievement granted*
    Birthday!

  16. Im 25 too, zelda was born when i was like 4 months old, it had been cool if i was able to play it back then, imagine a toddler playing a game :p that reminds me of something ive read the other day, i think it was on kotaku, about miyamoto “a person who spent his entire childhood outdoors, made a game that made children spend a lot of time indoors” anyway, sorry for the long comment but i guess video game makers waited for us to arrive in this world to start making good games, and as we grew up, the video game industry grew up with us, glad to be a gamer :)

  17. First off, happy birthday. Second, I read your article on Kotaku and I really enjoyed it. I was wondering if you think that a lot of the reasons why girls are pushed away from video games is because of the people they hang around with? Or would you say it’s more of society in general?

-btw, I run a club called Diversity in Games and Entertainment at DigiPen, so things like this are really interesting to me.

  18. I used to love that Highlander game when I was a kid.

Ahhh, the Sinclair Spectrum. Some of the best games ever.

  19. Happy birthday. I you ever do learn how to send that letter back in time, let me know. I was the same age when I forced myself to give up Lego, fearing that it would make me an eternal loser in high school. I was a loser anyways. If I hadn’t given up the Lego, I could have at least been a loser having fun.

  20. Getting on a bit hey Lisa? :P

    Happy Birthday!

  21. so all drama related comments aside…

    - Man I missed top 5 (this filled the void and so much more)
    - screw those guys.. wait what guys… I didn’t imply anyone was at fault.. E-what?… moving on..
    - HOLY CRAP! you’re an 85 baby too!? Didn’t realize so many amazing titles were released the same year as me (I’m lumping you in as an amazing title, I hope that is flattering and NOT insulting)
    - this is the first “top” anything list (from anyone) that actually satisfied me.. can’t think of a thing you missed.

    Grat’s you’re awesome. oh btw…

    <3

  22. Ummm… Can I borrow that magic FAX of yours?

  23. I enjoyed watching that – it’s good to see you in vid form again, Lisa. It also got me thinking about which games share my year of birth, as my 30th is coming up next month. It seems that I share 1981 with Frogger, Galaga, and Qix. Qix! I’m so very old. Oh, and it was the year in which the Apple II apparently saw the release of Softporn Adventure. Thanks for that, Wikipedia.

  24. Highlander was a total shit pile. Point to Lisa.
