Stu’s Web Wednesday – PushingUpRoses

As evident by browser histories, I spend a lot of time on the Internet. A LOT of time. Like it's my primary mode of entertainment at this point. No, not that kind of entertainment...mostly.

Nah, primarily I tend to watch a lot of shows that are made exclusively for the online market. Of course I watch stuff from the big boys/originators like Revision3 or TWiT, but the ones I tend to come back to, promote, and mention are the more, shall I say, independent of the content creators. With this world of the Interwebs, anyone with a camera set-up, some good writing and the ability to capture and edit can create a show and garner an audience. We've tried it.

Now, we have the Sites We Love (just look to the right and you can see them...if you can tear yourself away from looking at Pryde and Shorty in that Not FN Cute banner), but I'm gonna specifically point out a few of my favorite content providers here, hopefully giving y'all some new entertainment as well. And my first off is going to be someone that I've linked in Friday Round-Ups in the past, a reviewer/Let's Player who whenever I pull up her videos always seems to put a smile on my face with her very happy voice and fun/wacky disposition: Sarah "PushingUpRoses" Wilson.

Roses is one of the now multitude of reviewers/content producers with Channel Awesome on ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com, a site I've frequented from almost its beginning and watched grow into a real syndication and content creation network (They grow up so fast...sniff). Now, I could write a whole bunch of words about her in giving overview, but luckily she did a video just doing that. Reminds me of someone else who did similar...

Pushing Up Roses: Get To Know Me

As you can plainly see from both the above video and the even further above picture, you can already tell one of the reasons I enjoy her work: her fantastic personality! Not the fact at all the fact that she also happens to be extraordinarily cute and attractive...no...ok maybe a little...ok a lot. Of the content she produces, the primary videos Roses' creates are Let's Plays of old school DOS adventure games of our, well my, youth. She's got her Sierra cred, especially with King's Quest, and her screen name does come from a line of dialog from Grim Fandango, but Roses tends to use more off the beaten path kids games like the Paintbox Pal games, Amazon Trail and the games of Humongous Entertainment, like this two parter of Putt Putt Goes to the Moon with fellow TGWTG contruitors Paw Dugan and Todd in the Shadows:

Let's Play Shortys!: Putt Putt Goes to the Moon! (Part 1) & (Part 2)

Sadly, with the LP world, we don't get the pleasure of seeing Roses' face all that much. However, we do get graced by her beauty when she goes into her other love: music. Specifically music from the 60's, which she grew up on through her family. As she mentions in her get to know me video, she's a major Monkees fangirl and she (again with Todd and Paw) did a fantastic run through of The Monkees' psychedelic to almost insane movie Head, but me being me, I was a partial to her Vinyl Destination series on Disney's "Simply Mad About The Mouse" special of the early 90s:

Vinyl Destination Special: Simply Mad About the Mouse

That special kind of spurred off into a side series about music specials of our youth, with the most popular one about everyone's favorite dancing, singing dried grapes...

Musical Youth: Meet the California Raisins!

Not to spoil the ending, but I was pretty darn jealous of Paw there at the end...just sayin'. Roses is one that always tends to make me smile whenever I watch her videos and actually reminds me very much of our own Lisa in her personality, so if you like us here at Save Point (to which if you've read all this I hope you do), you'll love her work. And, again, it doesn't hurt that she's very easy to watch and listen to...just sayin'.

You can visit her own site at PushingUpRoses.com, explore all her videos on her blip.tv or ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com, follow her on Twitter and Facebook, and occasionally watch her live stream on uStream.

  1. The fact that you said I was somewhat like Lisa Foiles in even a small way flatters me to no end.

  2. I’ve somewhat drifted away from TGWTG over the past few months but I do watch the LPs of Roses ‘n Crew. Like you, Stu, they do make me smile. It’s also nice to have someone (of the female persuasion no less) touch on classic DOS/PC games instead of the tsunami of console-based retro game reviewers.

…and now for something completely different:

    NEED MOAR ROSIE LPs!

  3. Roses is one of my favorite Channel Awesome contributors, her LPs and retrospective are always fun to watch. Great article Stuart.

    • Why thank you! I’d promoted her before when she posted her a cappella Some of Shelly’s Blues in a Friday Round Up before because her singing made my knees suddenly turn into a gelatin like substance. So when the idea came on who to start this with, Roses was one of the first to come to mind and was the one I felt strongest.

      • Heh, I’ve been obsessively singing “Some of Shelley’s Blues” for the last few weeks. Quite nice to meet another Nez-head.

  4. Title makes me think of Seabird’s song “Rescue.”
