Stu’s Web Wednesday: FineLeatherJackets
Why yes, that is LaDuke sticking pins in a Francis Threepwood voodoo doll. What of it? Today for Web Wednesday, we delve into a bit of the avant-garde. I must admit, I'm not the biggest Machinima guy. I like my videos about games to be about them and not made of them. However, when one strikes my fancy, then I still give it all my normal respect. And seeing this gentleman's screen name comes from my number one game of all time (or Indiana Jones, however you want to take it, but seeing Guybrush is all over his site, I say it's from Monkey Island), I have to give him all the respect. But be forewarned, ye who travel here, these waters can be both hylarious and very VERY strange. If the image above didn't warn you enough.
FineLeatherJackets primarily creates his animation through Garry's Mod. For those of you who have no idea what Garry's Mod is, it's basically a sandbox tool for the Source engine, the engine that runs basically every Valve game, to create pretty much anything you want with the models and physics the engine creates. So his animations are pretty much exclusive to Valve games, specifically Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. However, ironically enough, I first found him with a trailer mash-up that blended Inception (a movie I could take or leave) with another game very high on my top games ever list Psychonauts:
By the way, if you haven't played Psychonauts, you're really missing out on an extremely underplayed game. Anywho, as I poked around, I saw where these videos were coming from. Some where some very reletively faithful recreations of classic cinema using the characters of TF2:
Or using that same mentality to in both recreating a piece of classic cinema while also having a bit of a statement on Valve themselves:
To creating a game trailer for a game I think we all wish was coming out soon:
For using very limited resources, one sandbox tool, I think the animatons and faithfulness to the source material is rather stunning really. You can find FineLeatherJackets primarally on his YouTube account, though he also has his own Guybrush heavy website as well. And if a site is Guybrush heavy, I feel compelled to support it in some manner.
Oh, you wanted an explination to the image I started this whole thing with. Well...you asked for it:

I laughed at the Monty Python/TF2 sketch. I can’t believe I forgot that line existed.
Good Web-Wednesday, Stu.

I have never been the biggest fan of Monty Python and the Meaning of Life, so I knew where that line it came from but not exactly it. When I realized it in relationship to what where they were from, I was on the floor.

I loved Psychonauts! It’s been so long since I played it. There just aren’t enough games with good humor right now, except some in the indie community (Dungeon’s of Dredmore and several other roguelikes have some good humor) (even if not always meant) (You kick a wall. You die.).
The tone was so perfect on Psychonauts.

Indeed. Double Fine’s work overall in that category is very good. But it’s Tim Schafer, so that’s expected. Though I hear back and forth on Brutal Legend, both Costume Quest and Stacking seemed to be very well received and something that is on that same plane. In some ways, some very twisted ways, The Bindings of Issac is also one that can be pretty darkly humorous.
